Station Preparation

3/25/2014

For the next few days, we will be completing 6 different stations that all explore how plate tectonics (plate movement due to convection in the mantle) changes the Earth's surface.  Four of the stations will focus on a different landform or event that results from a specific type of plate boundary.  Two stations will address all three plate boundaries.  Below is a summary of each station.

Station 1: Earthquakes
You will read a passage on the cause(s) of Earthquakes on Shonscience.  You will then watch two videos.
If you finish early, you will watch the "Earthquakes" BrainPop video and complete the graded quiz.

Station 2: Dynamic Plates
You will work with a partner on a Samsung tablet to explore an app called "Dynamic Plates".  Dynamic Plates allows you to see 7 different types of plate interactions.  By moving/dragging the plates in specific ways, you will be able to see the different

Station 3: Volcanoes & Hot Spots
You will read a passage on the cause(s) of Volcanic Eruptions and the formation of the Hawaiian Islands on Shonscience.  You will then watch 2 videos.  If you finish early, you will watch the "Volcanoes" BrainPop video and complete the graded quiz.

Station 4: Seafloor Spreading

You will read a passage on the process of Seafloor Spreading on Shonscience, then watch a video.  If you finish early, you will watch the "Oceanfloor" BrainPop video and complete the graded quiz.

Station 5: Snack Tectonics

You will work with a partner to model/demonstrate the different interactions at plate boundaries using graham crackers (plates) and frosting/marshmallow fluff (magma/lava).  Below are the four different interactions.
  • Divergent Plate Boundaries
  • Convergent Plate Boundaries (Continental and Oceanic)
  • Convergent Plate Boundaries (Continental and Continental)
  • Transform Plate Boundaries

You will be able to eat your plate (snack) tectonics after you have received permission from Ms. Shon after completing the entire station assignment.

Station 6: Mountains
You will read a passage on the cause(s) of mountain formation on Shonscience.  You will then watch a video.  If you finish early, you will watch the "Mountains" video on BrainPop and complete the graded quiz.

Assignment:
Copy the question and answer them in complete sentences in your science notebook.
Due: Wednesday 26, 2014.

1.  What do all 6 stations explore?
2.  Which stations will use Shonscience?
3.  What are the four different plate boundaries you will model on the Snack Tectonics station?
4.  Will you be able to eat your plate (snack) tectonics?  Explain.
5.  On which stations will you be working with a partner?
6.  How many different plate interactions will you be able to see on the Dynamic Plates station?
7.  What technology will you use on the Dynamic Plates station?
8.  What will represent the plates and magma at the Snack Tectonics station?
9.  At which stations will you watch a BrainPop video (and complete the graded quiz) if you finish early?

Station A: Evidence of Pangaea

Directions
  • Pick and research any 2 of the below pieces of evidence that support the theory that the continents were once connected as the super-continent "Pangaea".  You may use the provided links, textbooks, and video below.

Evidence of Pangaea
1.  Fossils
  • Glossopteris
  • Lystrosaurus
  • Mesosaurus
  • Cynognathus
2.  Rock Strata

3.  Glacial Deposits

Station B: Recreate Pangea

Use the evidence provided to recreate Pangaea.

If you have trouble, refer to the following sites for guidance:
http://www.kscience.co.uk/animations/pangaea.htm

2.  Roll your mouse over the graphic to define the following terms: subduction zone, lithosphere, asthenosphere, magma, trench, volcano, volcanic arc
3.  What causes Earthquakes and tsunamis?
4.  What is created when two continental plates collide?
